New Smart Water Meters Are Coming

October 4, 2026 10:12 pm

The Fort Bend County MUD No. 116 (FBCMUD 116) Board of Directors is funding a project to replace the District’s water meters with smart meters.

Installation is scheduled to begin this upcoming Monday, October 12, 2026, and will follow in the order posted below.

Facts About This Upgrade

  • Smart meters measure water more accurately, send readings without a manual visit, and give each household a way to see its own use.
  • There is no charge on your bill for the meter or the installation.
  • The meter stores and sends its own data, including through a storm or a power outage.

Smart Meters That Pair With Your Smart Device, Beginning in January 2027

Once all smart meters have been physically installed, which is estimated to be wrapped up by early January 2027, you will be able to download an app for your smart device that places new tools directly in the palm of your hands, at no cost to you.

  • See water usage down to 15-minute intervals
  • Set a leak or high-usage alert by text or email
  • Catch a running toilet, a stuck irrigation valve, or a pool auto-fill before the bill arrives

A full guide and video series has already been produced with instructions showing how to set up the app, which will also be posted at the top of the Fort Bend County MUD No. 116 District website when the app rolls out in January.

In The Meantime

Crews will move through the District over about three months, one area at a time. You do not need to be home. Water service is interrupted only while your meter is swapped, typically 15 to 30 minutes, on a weekday during daytime hours.

What changes at home?

Better quality of service. Water meters wear out and become less accurate over time. Replacing it with a smart meter ensures an accurate measure of the water delivered to your house and peace of mind when it comes to expensive leaky pipes and how much water your household is using.

This also allows the District to conserve water, since accurate meter readings will help the District pinpoint and stop any leaks before they get to your residence in an effort to reduce water loss and ultimately save you money on your water bill.

Three months, five phases

Work stays inside one area at a time, so the notice you get matches the streets crews are actually on. A short gap sits between windows. Weather can move a street inside its window. It will not pull a neighborhood out of order.

What to expect on installation day

A crew from Accurate Meter & Supply will work outside at the meter box. Each person on the crew wears an identification badge. You do not need to be home. If you are, a crew member will knock before starting. If you are not, a door tag will be left when the work is done.

Water will be off for a short time, typically 15 to 30 minutes. Work is scheduled Monday through Friday, generally between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Before you use water again, run a faucet on cold for 3 to 5 minutes. An inside or outside faucet is fine.

Questions residents ask

  • Will this cost me anything?
No. The District is funding the project as authorized by the Fort Bend County No. 116 Board of Directors. You will not see a meter charge or an installation fee.
  • Do I need to be home?
No. The work is at the meter box.
  • Will my bill go up?
The rates are not changing. An older meter can under-read as it wears, so a new meter may show usage the old meter was missing. If the bill changes, it is because the reading is more accurate, not because a new fee was added.
  • When can I use the app?
The app will be made available to residents after all smart meters have been installed in the District, estimated in early January 2027.
  • Who do I call?
Si Environmental customer care at (832) 490-1600, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or customercare@sienv.com. After hours, weekends, and holidays, call dispatch at (832) 490-1601.
